Calastory by Amenamallorca

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

Every place in the world has something special, something distinct and local. When we travel, it is usually what we intend to discover. Opening a new page is always so exciting and wonderful! Why not try opening one every day of your stay in Mallorca and still have many volumes of these books to come…

This is a story about Majorcan calas, a Calastory.

A book that has many volumes to come, and we will be adding new pages to it. You see, this is a very interesting thing: when you travel, you need to be in a new place every time. But not similar. Completely new one. That is why I believe that people who stay in those typical standardized hotel spaces are lacking: they go to the same beach, same pool, same restaurant every day and they even find themselves booking the same sunbeds near jacuzzi during their 10-day vacation! Sounds familiar? Then a story about Majorcan calas is for you and about you. Time to let travel broaden your eyes in astonishment…

Calastory starts with one cala and goes beyond Majorca.

Calas are small bays surrounded by rocks and pinetrees so typical to all Balearic islands.

But the majority of the most popular ones is located in Majorca, and it is Majorca that offers you so many calas that cannot fit in a year of daily travel. As we live in Majorca for the second year and we tend to say that we have seen a lot of them, we still admit we have not visited a half. There are so many calas in Majorca!

Like a never-ending story, calastory, a book full of pictures and fresh air, pine trees, palms, white sand, grey pebbles, and of course those magnificent turquoise waters of the Mediterranean sea…

We first introduct you to Sa Calobra. To the west of Formentor peninsula, as Serra de Tramuntana mountains flow with mountains to the west, they really don’t get lower in height for quite some time. And when you look at the map, you may think there are no beaches, not even access to water. But nature had its trick by creating a river that flows into the sea, and this river creates a wonderful valley de Pareis.

It is one of the best hiking places in Majorca. You can go up with the river and come back to the sea shore to enjoy the sunset. Daily visits are bery popular. Sa Calobra is a name of the small fisherman’s village next to torrent de Pareis, but everyone in Sa Calobra comes for this unique spot.

The road to Sa Calobra is, however, a bit difficult. I always pity those ones on bicycles, as you have to travel over 10 km along a serpentine road which is narrow, that is why it requires a good driving skills. But as you go down to the seashore, you become amazed how great the Sa Calobra bay is as the mountains simply don’t let it go. Like giants, they stand and protect their lands.

To the south of Amena Mar Hotel in S’Illot there are so many calas, and the sea short becomes cut with those little scissors of rocks. Many resorts like Cala d’Or consist of over five cala beaches. But two are the top popular. It is Calo des Moro and the nearby Cala Llombards.

If you google Majorcan calas or bays, you will most likely see at least one picture of Calo des Moro or Cala Llombards. Even if you google Majorca, you will see them. The picturesque calas are famous due to their narrowness and the crystal clear turquoise waters. But the major difference between them is that Calo des Moro is a quieter place with rocks for those seeking more nature, while Cala Llombards is a sandy beach which is already stamped by the presence of civilization. Sunbeds, cafeterias and tourists all around. To get to Calo des Moro, you need to walk a bit. But not too far. Cala Llombards is just a part of the village with the same name and is easily accessible by car. But for both of them you will need a day at least, because the rocks nearby offer great views and are perfect for picnic chill.

Bear in mind that for Calo des Moro as well as for Sa Calobra you will need the shoes for the sea. In Calo des Moro you will walk by the private garden and see some interesting plants. In Cala Llombards you can enjoy the village which is quite picturesque. And Sa Calobra is adventure in itself. I always wonder if we can put a tent and sleep there? Will try and tell you later…

As Calastory does not end here. More calas wait in queue to tell it to you…😊
