Calastory of Formentor

Beautiful day trip idea if you want to savour Mallorca

Hello... today I have a perfectly romantic feeling. Having had a glass of wine, I feel enlightened to write about the place in Mallorca I mostfly feel attached to. It is Formentor. Whenever we go there, it is like a little magic that happens between two people and there is nothing and noone that can interfere. I travelled specially to take pictures for the blog, but this time I am sure you'll enjoy the description. I tried hard to make it as detailed as possible.

Formentor is like a cherry on Mallorca cake. It is never ending discovery of new places, landscapes, photo shots, shady miracles, and amazing smell of pine trees just around that peninsula that makes about a solid part of Mallorca.

It is hard to avoid it not only because seeing Mallorca is impossible without Formentor, but also due to the fact that Formentor takes a large part of the island. Whenever you look at the map of the island, it is Formentor on the north, and you definitely see it when you land if you fly from most destinations in Europe.

As Formentor is made of rocky shores with beautiful cliff endings, the whole idea of a beach in Formentor already sounds surprising. That is why for more than a year we traveled around on a road that crosses it from the Lighthouse to the Mirador without acknowledging that there is much to see on both sides, left and right. And this is how I occasionally found a beautiful picture of Cala (small bay with a beach in Spanish) just to discover that it is located in Formentor!

The excitement rose, and for more than a week I was longing to go and see by myself. We found the 'cala location' in Formentor, one in front of the other. And interestingly both are made by nature with the help of a simple landscape 'tool' - river valley. Despite the high rocks around, both to the left and right, Cala Murta and Cala Figuera are right where the river from both sides flows into the sea.

When you leave the crossing of the Formentor beach and head to the Cap de Formentor, it is about 10 minute drive until you reach a sign to the left Cala Figuera followed by the sign Cala Murta on the right. Many cars parked both sides of the road will also be a good hint. But be very careful with parking as the road is higher than the side pathways, and if you have a small car with low clearance, my practical advise is to look carefully not to scratch the bottom when you park. Then you can visit each Cala one by one, with the difference that Cala Figuera is a way that is shorter but higher to climb on the way back, and Cala Murta is a longer way, but inside the forest and not much climbing on the way back.

Both Calas are fascinating. There are so many shady places to lay down, you don't need any umbrella. But unlike Cala Figuera which has sandy and pebble beach, the beach at Cala Murta is just pebbles. We would advise going to the right and hiding in the shades and swimming from bigger stones. The water in Cala Murta is blue unlike the green-turquiose in Cala Figuera. But this blue color is so deep that it's impossible to describe!

On the way to both calas you will find picnic spots, so this is a good idea of a daytrip when you can have lunch in the pine forest and then walk to another shore to swim. We cannot advise which one is better for which part of the day, just consider your plans. Or whichever cala asks for you first. They are like mermaids, waiting for the guests and smiling to every visitor.

Formentor is indeed a pleasure. Don't be lazy to drive to the north, you will not regret a second!:)
