Post inspired by the bright colors of spring Mallorcan flowers
Flowers are like cherries on a cake when you imagine typical Mallorcan landscape. What is more interesting, they are here all year round: in mild winters the numerous cactus plants are blossoming.
Overall Mediterranean region is fuitful in terms of flowers. The varierty of wild flowers that grow during spring time impressed me as I spent my first spring in Mallorca. I took some photographs for you to see how they look like.
Plentiful of colors make every part of the island unique and different from each other. The way plants and flowers are striving with rocky soil, especially close to the sea, is mesmerizing:
Story of sea squill
However, there is one particular flower plant that has become a landmark of the island. This is the sea squill (maritime squill).
It looks like a grass bush in early autumn, and as it gets cooler and starts raining, the plant starts smelling like... cat piss. And I am not joking! You can test it by yourself if you happen to be in Mallorca during low season. The smell is everywhere around the island, even in Tramuntana mountains.
But this only happens for a couple of months. As the sun gets warmer and temperature rises, the plant becomes a flower like on the picture and stops smelling letting the tourists enjoy their summer in Mallorca :)
