Peninsula which shapes the northeastern part of the island, giving a sharp end with its stunning panoramas
It was on our first visit to Mallorca when we reached Formentor. But it has been more than a year, and we still discover new places on the peninsula. And we still have a few hidden spots (mostly beaches) where we intend to go.
That is why the post will be renewed soon when we add other places to see in Formentor following our future journeys. But for now, this is what we believe is a capture of travel information on this amazing point of interest:
A bit of history
They say when you know where you go, you go with confidence. Usually when we travel somewhere, we prefer to read before we go. Google now is like encyclopedia for everything, so just as we decided to explore the island for the first time, on our first trip we went exactly and specifically to Formentor.
It is hard to miss. When you fly to Mallorca from Europe, it is Formentor that you first see from the entire island on approach. And this is how it looks from the airplane:
The peninsula ranges up to 14 km from Pollenca to Cap de Formentor Lighthouse. It was once owned by the poet Miguel Llobera, but when he died, the peninsula was divided into small plots of land and sold by parts to various owners. Later it was nationalized and became part of the national park which now includes the whole Cap de Formentor, making it a great spot for traveling.
Following the road
When starting the exploration of the peninsula, stop by the famous Mirador just to see the height of the rocks. The sea anxiously rustles somewhere down, and the views are truly panoramic. But that is not the end! It is just the beginning!
If you consider yourself a good driver, take a challenge and drive up to the mountain where another Mirador is waiting for you. The road is very narrow, but usually tourists make their way to the top. There are fewer tourists, but from there you will be able to spot the whole peninsula from Pollenca to the lighthouse. There are some hiking trails there, but make sure you have the right shoes as the trails are quite steep there:
The Beach
As you travel to the middle of Cap de Formentor, the signs will lead you to another beautiful spot which is the Formentor Beach (Platja de Formentor). To the left as you go straight following the sign you find a parking lot. The beach is one of our favorite, although we never had a chance to stop there and swim. The waters are crystal clear and turquiose, and the beach is surrounded by the fragrant pine trees:
The Lighthouse
"Lighthouses are not just stone, brick, metal, and glass. There's a human story at every lighthouse; that's the story I want to tell."
The trip continues along the road and finally leads us to the lighthouse, Far de Formentor. It stands alone at the very end of Peninsula, among very lonely and liveless rocks. Surrounded by the sea from three sides, it is quite windy there. Locals say it is the place where the winds meet each other. Indeed, Far de Formentor is a romantic place. We first went there for my birthday, and although it was end of November, I still remember magnificent sunset we saw from the lighthouse:
But we would strongly recommend to refrain from travelling there in summer in the second part of the day if you have a big car. The parking is very full there, and it may take up to one hour to park and to drive from there. However, the sunset is worth it.
Another places we never saw in Formentor are Cala Figuera, Cala Murta and some other small beaches. But we will definitely explore them this year.
Formentor is a place to start exploring Mallorca. After you see it, you will feel you saw the important part of the island. Whenever our friends and family travel to Mallorca for the first time, we always take them to Formentor.
