Being car vegan is a trend nowadays. Not only is it good for environment, but also very good for the people who take the responsibility to charge their vehicle like their cell phone as soon as the battery is low. Challenging, if you are in location where it is difficult to find the working socket. However, the more popular electric cars get, the more people and especially the rental companies are offering them to their clients.
Of course, in many case being vegan is about saving money, not just about the environment itself. Car rentals for instance get great discounts for buying electric vehicles in bulk. Car owners are also counting their petrol euros. And the raising anxiety around diesel as a source of car power puts all car vegans closer to owning or renting a fully electric vehicle, not even a hybrid car.
Now let's take this situation and imagine you in such a car in Mallorca. How does it go? First of all, the size of the island is already a hint that you won't travel more than 400 km in one day. And maybe even in one week. So you won't have to worry if your car stops in the middle of the island and you will have to put on all your charm to stop another car to help you or call some kind of service. This is already a great point. And very important.
Take you electric vehicle and make sure it has at least 200 km of battery life. In this case you can plan having it without trouble. If it has less than 150 km of battery life, then it becomes and issue as every trip across the island will have to involve searching for a charger and then waiting for your vegan car to charge its greens.
So this is rule number one if you want to enjoy your electric car experience in Mallorca. The reason behind this is that although the island boasts many charging stations which I will describe below, you may encounter a situation when they either don't work, don't charge your exact car or can be occupied although none of this is mentioned in the application it supports.
The most popular service is of course Melib. You download the application or get the physical card if you are the local and find a place to charge your car. Now with the service of reserving a place you can have a guaranteed one. But Melib very often lacks technical support and can be out of service even if application does not show it. Plus you have to pay around 30 cents for kilowatt.
Another alternative is Iberdrola. This is a great service also with application, almost always working and with various types of chargers. However, Iberdrola does not have as many stations as Melib. And it still costs around 30 cents for kilowatt.
Some other companies of chargers can also be found around the island, but are not that popular and not that well connected like Melib and Iberdrola. Supermarkets like Mercadona, Ikea, shopping centers like Fan or Porto Pi all have electric chargers, but they can be out of service or occupied due to its free of charge status. However, there is always a hidden gem and it is Lidl. Not only most of Lidl stations offer a fast charging of 22 kilowatts per hours, they are also free of charge and you can get to some of them even on Sunday and in late evening if there is access to the supermarket parking zone. They still, of course, can be out of service, but very rare. Lidl is a good option if you don't want to pay money to charge your vegan car.
In any case, Mallorca is moving towards electric cars. With the popularity of car rentals and the fact that the quantity of cars almost doubles on the island once the season starts (mainly because of rented cars), I strongly believe we will see more electric stations, chargers and less pricey options. So let's keep it green!
